The “Heistse Berg” in Heist-op-den-Berg is a historic site and the second highest natural point in the province of Antwerp. On the foundations of what was once the municipal school now stands an apartment building with panoramic views. On the second floor, Mieke Van Herck architects merged two flats into one living space of over 200 m2 with a large loft feel.

Unlike the many realisations in the midst of vast rural surroundings, the design team was able to establish Mieke Van Herck's signature style in this urban context too. Grateful use was made of the private character of the apartment. The team was able to create as much openness as possible whilst maintaining privacy. This is also obvious in the master bedroom, where, thanks to magnificent views of the green surroundings, a seamless indoor-outdoor feeling becomes feasible even in the city.
The living room and living kitchen are in one open space. This completes the loft feel. Apart from impeccable customisation, the proper selection of designer furniture there also creates a sophisticated high-end living experience. We observe a chandelier by CTO Lighting and designer furniture by Balo. The kitchen was finished in travertine and the living room was conceived as a cosy sitting area with an adjoining office space installed out of sight.
In line with the loft concept, the bedroom, bathroom and dressing room were also united into one connecting space. The bathroom overflows with wellness feeling. Nothing but zen vibes here. The choice of a dark, intimate colour palette in this flat culminates in the hammam with black microtopping. The black freestanding bathtub also hijacks the attention. Finally, the apartment also has a room with sauna and fitness, and there is an extra guest room.
The clients trusted Mieke Van Herck to turn this investment into a special project. During the design and construction process, the couple soon realised that they wanted to enjoy this place themselves, and in the meantime they are living there. The loft reflects who they are. This is where they feel at home.
